Empowering healthcare education through immersive online simulation

The ENVISION Project (European Network on Virtual Simulation Online) was an Erasmus+ strategic partnership that responded to the urgent need for high-quality, future-ready online simulation in healthcare education – accelerated by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through international collaboration between European and Canadian partners, ENVISION developed freely accessible Virtual Gaming Simulations (VGS) – an interactive, video-based simulation method designed to support clinical reasoning, communication, and reflection in a safe digital environment. Learners follow a patient scenario and make clinical decisions at key points. Each choice leads to different outcomes, just like in real life. Because it is web-based, VGS can be used anytime, anywhere—individually or in group settings — and repeated to reinforce learning.

On this website, we proudly present the outcomes of our project to support innovation in health and social care education. Developed in close co-creation with educators, students, and simulation experts, these VGS provide a realistic, flexible, and engaging way to practise clinical decision-making, interprofessional communication, and person-centred care. Whether you are an educator looking to enrich your curriculum, or a student eager to test your knowledge in a safe but realistic environment – ENVISION offers the tools to learn, reflect, and grow.

VGS: Hello, you must be Flo

“Hello, you must be Flo!” is the first European Virtual Gaming Simulation (VGS) developed specifically for undergraduate nursing education. It is also highly relevant for students and professionals across various health disciplines.
In this simulation, learners take on the role of Flo Becaspin, a community health worker visiting her 72-year-old client, Ms Flament, who has type 2 diabetes and has recently missed two scheduled appointments. The focus lies on personalised care, communication, and clinical reasoning in a community-based context.

VGS: Caring off duty

Caring Off Duty is the second Virtual Gaming Simulation (VGS) developed within the framework of the European Envision project. It builds upon the foundations laid by “Hello, you must be Flo?”, the first VGS designed for undergraduate nursing education. This new simulation represents a second-generation approach, both pedagogically and technically.
Learners assume the role of Sarah Smith, a paediatric nurse encountering a critical situation while off duty. The simulation consists of 11 decision points, where the learner must choose the most appropriate course of action.

Guides

ENVISION also developed step-by-step guides to help students, educators, and institutions make the most of virtual simulation: using the existing ones or creating their one.
