🏠 Hello, you must be Flo!

A Virtual Home Visit Simulation

“Hello, you must be Flo!” is the first European Virtual Gaming Simulation (VGS) developed specifically for undergraduate nursing education. It is also highly relevant for students and professionals across various health disciplines.

In this simulation, learners take on the role of Flo Becaspin, a community health worker visiting her 72-year-old client, Ms Flament, who has type 2 diabetes and has recently missed two scheduled appointments. The focus lies on personalised care, communication, and clinical reasoning in a community-based context.

🎯Learning Objectives

Through this simulation, learners engage with the following core competencies:

  • Person- and family-centred care in an interprofessional home setting
  • Responding to functional decline in older adults
  • Supporting self-management of type 2 diabetes
  • Communicating in a way adapted to varying levels of health literacy

🧩Simulation Structure

The online simulation integrates all critical phases of simulation pedagogy—prebriefing, scenario, and debriefing—supplemented by an additional knowledge corner to support extended learning.

📘 Prebriefing

A structured prebriefing session prepares learners for the simulation, including:

  • An overview of learning objectives and simulation flow
  • Technical instructions for independent play
  • A case summary introducing Flo and her client, Ms Flament

Recommended prior knowledge: basic understanding of type 2 diabetes, elderly care, primary care, and health literacy.

🎬 Online Simulation Scenario

The simulation begins as Flo arrives at her client’s home. Learners proceed through 19 decision points, each with predefined options that influence the course of the visit.

Each choice triggers immediate feedback (in text or video form), aimed at:

  • Stimulating clinical reasoning
  • Highlighting the implications of specific actions
  • Promoting reflection on step-by-step care delivery

The simulation can be completed independently, in private or group settings, at the learner’s own pace, and repeated to reinforce understanding.

🧭 Debriefing

Upon completion, students are invited to engage with a self-debriefing tool, based on structured reflective questioning.

  • Encourages critical thinking aligned with learning objectives
  • Offers a consistent method for individual reflection
  • Can be complemented by a group debrief for deeper discussion

💡 Knowledge Corner

Not an online course, but a supportive element of the simulation. It is not a mandatory part of the online experience but offers a valuable tool for assessing prior knowledge and exploring the clinical reasoning behind the decision points. Learners can review it either before or after the simulation.

🎓For Educators

“Hello, you must be Flo!” is designed for easy integration into classroom, blended, or remote learning environments. The simulation is self-directed and includes embedded feedback at each decision point—no live facilitation required.

Educators are supported across all three simulation phases:

  • Prebriefing: ready-to-use materials ensure a clear, safe learning start
  • Simulation: learners make autonomous decisions, supported by in-scenario feedback
  • Debriefing: the self-debriefing tool enables reflective learning, also in asynchronous formats
  • Knowledge Corner: to assess prior knowledge or to explore the clinical reasoning behind the decision points.

Tip: Clearly communicate in advance whether the simulation will be assessed, and how.
