ENVISION ran from 2021 to 2023 and was rooted in international collaboration between Europe and Canada. The project aimed to build digital education readiness among healthcare educators and students across Europe by making online simulation education accessible, interactive and future proof.

The ENVISION partnership united higher education institutions and a technology provider with a shared vision of innovation in digital healthcare education:

Artevelde University of Applied Sciences (Belgium – project lead)

Artevelde University of Applied Sciences (AHS) is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Flanders (Belgium), with over 15,000 students, 1,400 staff members, and 11 campuses located in the heart of Ghent. AHS is an open institution that values creativity, innovative thinking, self-directed learning, and entrepreneurship. Rooted in a culture of internationalization, AHS is an active member of various international networks, regularly participates in global conferences, and maintains close collaborations with international partners for both educational and research initiatives.

Toronto Metropolitan University (Canada)

Toronto Metropolitan University integrates real-world experience into classroom learning and is a leader in diversity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. With over 45,000 students enrolled in 62 undergraduate and 55 graduate programs, the university is home to Ontario’s largest collaborative nursing degree program—delivered in partnership with Centennial and George Brown Colleges—serving over 2,000 students across four years. This program fosters strong inter-campus collaboration, forming the basis for the development of Virtual Gaming Simulations (VGS), first launched in 2013 by faculty from all three sites. Since then, numerous educators have contributed to the creation and study of VGS as an effective learning tool aligned with course objectives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of VGS expanded globally, with over 1.5 million plays to date

OAMK Oulun Ammattikorkeakoulu (Finland)

Oulu University of Applied Sciences (OUAS) educates skilled professionals to meet the demands of working life and plays a vital role in supporting the socio-economic and cultural development of Northern Finland. With approximately 9,000 students and 650 staff members, OUAS integrates teaching with research, development, and innovation (RDI) as a core institutional function. The university’s RDI activities focus on fostering regional growth through workforce development, business support, and the advancement of innovation and international collaboration. Key focus areas include ICT, culture, and cross-media, reflecting OUAS’s commitment to regional relevance and global engagement.

Ljudska Univerza Velenje (Slovenia)

Established in 1959, Ljudska univerza Velenje (LUV) is a public, non-profit adult education institution actively engaged in both formal and non-formal education across diverse target groups. With a core staff of 22 and over 60 contractual educators, LUV offers a wide range of programmes including adult primary and secondary education, vocational and professional training, language and ICT courses, social activation initiatives, and labour market–oriented programmes. The institution also coordinates two Centres for Intergenerational Learning and the innovative Pattern City ecosystem—an interdisciplinary digital learning environment focused on experiential and playful learning. LUV promotes social inclusion, supports rural development through entrepreneurship training, and is highly active in local, national, and European educational initiatives. It participates in various international projects, primarily under Erasmus+ (KA2).

Joubel founded H5P and are also the creators of H5P.com
What is H5P? A plugin enabling publishing systems to create more interactive content. H5P makes it easy for everyone to create and share interactive content with a great user experience for both the content creators and the content consumers.
An exponentially growing number of websites in the world use H5P to provide their users with great content. H5P may be plugged in to existing publishing systems like Canvas, Brightspace or WordPress and empower the users of these systems to create better content faster.

Ghent University (Belgium)

Within the ENVISION project, a multidisciplinary team from the nursing and pedagogy departments contributes complementary expertise in simulation-based education and educational technology to strengthen the methodological and pedagogical foundation of the virtual games (VGs).
